The Rochester (NY) Democrat & Chronicle (12/8, Campbell, Muscavage) reports that the collapse of Health Republic, “the co-operative that left nearly 200,000 New Yorkers scrambling for replacement coverage when state and federal regulators shut it down last month amid insurmountable financial woes,” resulted in hospitals, physicians, medical organizations and insurance agents performing “millions of dollars in uncompensated work.” The NY Association of Health Underwriters on Monday asked Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and New York lawmakers to use some of the state’s $1 billion surplus to “cover Health Republic’s unpaid bills to providers and brokers.” How the state will spend its extra funds will be negotiated as part of its budget for the next fiscal year.
